SABINE MARCELIS.

"The mysterious light in the darkness."

BORN IN HOLLAND, GREW UP IN NEW ZEALAND, SABINE MARCELIS IS A PASSIONATE PROFESSIONAL SNOWBOARDER,  AN ATYPICAL artist AND ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED EMERGING DESIGNERS.

SABINE’S OBSERVATIONS DURING HER SNOWBOARDING DAYS ACT AS THE BIGGEST MUSE FOR HER DESIGN CAREER. SHE EXPLAINS HOW SHE WAS DEEPLY FASCINATED BY HER SKI GOOGLES’ LENSES FILTERING THE SUNLIGHT IN ORDER TO ALTER HER VIEW BY THE USE OF CHANGING COLORS.

“ON CLOUDY DAYS I WORE MY GOGGLES WITH ORANGE OR PINK LENSES. ON SUNNY DAYS, I WENT WITH THE BRONZE OR YELLOW GLASSES. IT WAS ALWAYS SO INTERESTING TO ME HOW VISION THROUGH LENSES OF DIFFERENT COLORS INFLUENCED THE PERCEPTUAL EXPERIENCE OF THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT”, EXPLAINS MARCELIS.

HER WORK FOCUSES ON HIGHLIGHTING OPTICAL EFFECTS OF LUMINOUS MATERIALS TO EPMHASIZE THE VISUAL POTENTIALS IN AN EXTREME MANNER, AND ACQUIRING A CONTROL OVER VISUAL PERCEPTION.  SABINE IS A FLEXIBLE, YET PRAGMATIC DESIGNER, AND OPEN TO COLLABORATIONS WITH OTHER DESIGNERS. SHE HAS RECENTLY WORKED ON A NUMBER OF ARCHITECTURAL PROJECTS WITH OMA (OFFICE FOR METROPOLITAN ARCHITECTURE),  and galleries such as etage projects to SHOWCASES PERSONAL WORK THAT IS BASED ON MATERIAL EXPERIMENTATION AND DEFINITION.

HER COLLABORATIONS WITH BRIT VAN NERVEN — SHOWCASED IN COPENHAGEN BASED GALLERY ETAGE PROJECTS — ‘VOIE LIGHTS’ AND ‘HUE MIRRORS’ GOT AMAZING FEEDBACK FROM THE CROWD AND SIGNALED THE INITIATION OF HER HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL UPCOMING DESIGN CAREER.

‘VOIE LIGHTS’, FEATURED INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE MANIPULATION OF LIGHT PATHS WITH MARCELIS’ USAGE OF CAST POLYESTER RESIN SHAPES TO DIFFUSE NEON LIGHT AND TO ENHANCE THE RESIN’S OWN COLOR PROPERTIES, CREATING A PRETTY GLOWING EFFECT.

‘HUE MIRRORS’, FEATURED EXPERIMENTS OF CREATING VISUAL EFFECTS USING GLASS, TO WARP PEOPLE'S PERCEPTION OF THE SPACE BY ADDING A LAYER OF NON-UNIFORM COLOR. SABINE PLAYED AROUND AND EXPERIMENTED IN A GLASS SPECIALIST’S FACTORY WITH SEVERAL TECHNIQUES SUCH AS SANDBLASTING, UV GLUING, LAYERING AND COLOR OVERLAYS AND INVESTIGATE NEW POSSIBILITIES.

HER LATEST DESIGN SERIES, ‘DAWN LIGHT’, WAS FEATURED IN DESIGN DAYS DUBAI 2016. in the series, MARCELIS EXPRESSEs THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LIGHT, COLOR AND TRANSPARENCY — PARTICULARLY THE MOMENT OF THE DAY WHEN THE SUN, CLOUDS AND SKY JOIN, CREATING A MOMENTARY RIOT OF HUES. THE FAMILY OF UNIQUE LUMINAIRES WAS MADE FROM GEOMETRIC CAST RESIN SHAPES EMBEDDED WITH A SINGLE WHITE NEON TUBE WHOSE COOL TONE SHOWCASES THE SUBTLE MANIPULATION OF COLOR EMPLOYED. THE COLLECTION OF SCULPTURAL LIGHTING OBJECTS BROUGHT AN ABSTRACT TRANQUILITY TO THE SETTINGS IN WHICH THEY ARE PLACED. SPEAKING OF HER MOTIVATION BEHIND THE WORK, MARCELIS SAYS SHE WAS INSPIRED BY “A TIME IN THE DAY WHERE THE SUN, CLOUDS AND SKY JOIN TO CREATE A MOMENTARY RIOT OF HUES.”
